M1 – Projekt „Geselligkeit“

M1 – Projekt „Geselligkeit“

Since 2018, the teaching and research area of architectural theory has been cooperating with the Dutch Landscape Foundation Limburg. The aim of the cooperation is to convert the former Hoogcruts monastery complex into an euregional future workshop. At the site not far from Gulpen, users can exchange views on issues of landscape, art, culture and technology. Over the course of several design-build projects, we constructed a new workshop building in the monastery garden out of clay and bamboo. In the coming winter semester, we would like to reflect on the further expansion of the monastery. We ask how architecture could promote friendly togetherness? Which architecture serves both to refine the senses and to cultivate friendly relationships? Starting with the Greek symposium and the Roman convivium, we will look at modern banquets and table societies. Tables and boards establish forms of exchange, rituals of conviviality, practices of participation. As part of the M1 project, we look at everything that holds body and soul together, such as the art of cooking, table talk, table decorations or furniture making. In the building stock of the former monastery, students of the M1 project design inviting spaces for cooking and eating together.
