Exhibition “other places” #2
“Other Places” shows the results of an innovative teaching format, conceived for students of the Romance Institute of the University of Cologne and the teaching and research area of architectural theory at RWTH Aachen University. The subject of the interdisciplinary project work was places that have long been out of the focus of public attention; places with an uncertain future and an almost forgotten history. What seems to connect these places is above all their indeterminacy.
Other places require other strategies of description, intervention, planning.
The exhibited works emerged from the tentative explorations of slag heaps, brownfields and wastelands along the Datteln-Hamm Canal in the eastern Ruhr region. In the sense of inventive analyses, the works expand the methodological spectrum of conventional descriptions of place to include cinematic, cartographic, pictorial and graphic approaches, each with the aim of making the “other” of the places visible.
