The term “series” is used in many disciplines but understood differently in each. In mathematics, for example, it refers to an object composed of an infinite sequence of operations. In music, tone rows, leitmotifs, and loops are examples of serial elements. In the visual arts, the tension between the serial and the particular is a theme in its own right. In architecture, seriality manifests in various ways, such as the repetitive structuring of facades, modular support systems, and more abstract concepts, like typology.
In the context of this impromptu, we focus on more than just the regularity of serial systems; we focus primarily on their exceptions, anomalies, special cases, and extreme points. Rather than designing a series, the task is to consciously emphasize and place deviations that complement, question, or complete a serial system.
