This elective research seminar initiates a series of teaching and research activities, which are conceived in cooperation with the architectural faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee.

It is our common ambition to create the new Indo-German centre as a platform where architects, designers, artists, craftspersons and industrial makers can engage with each other to create an understanding for the existing heritage and lead to synergies for innovation. The new Indo-German centre will allow us to coordinate both teaching and research projects with a common focus on sustainable design-build-procedures, through which experimental architecture is thought, conceived and manufactured.

During our first seminar, involving faculty members and students from IIT Roorkee and RWTH Aachen University, we will raise an inventory of materials and building procedures, which are likely to engender experimental architecture. We will closely look at European examples of clay and earth architecture. The inventory of materials and building practices will be established by means of different media such as interviews, films, photography, maps and analytical drawings. The findings and descriptions along with criteria and modes of selection will be gathered on a website conceived as a steadily growing encyclopaedia. The inventory, providing a support for all further steps, will be used as communication platform for the project teams working in India and Germany.
