Urban Photography

Seminar SoSe 18
M.Sc. Wahlmodul
Dozentin: Dr. Ela Kaçel, Bahçesehir University Istanbul

Urban photography is more than a mere visual representation of cities. In hand of diverse analytical methods, photographers visualize urban landscapes as well as the spirit of places and people, the cultural diversity and the experience of living in cities – whether it be a historic town, a ghetto, an industrial site or a non-place. The aim of this case study-led course is to explore how the city has been a photographic topos since the invention of the camera.

Photographers recorded the key phases in the life cycle of cities such as urban destructions, the rise and decay of new residential districts planned in the city centers and in suburbia. Urban photography as a research-based artistic practice offers its methods and techniques to the use of urban designers, planners and architects for a critical, reflexive practice of urbanism. The course will provide a platform to apply some of those methods on a particular design question. A workshop on urban photography and guest lectures by photographers will enable collaborative exchange between the disciplines of photography and architecture.
