Migration into cities simultaneously produces social cohesion and segregation in the urban environment where newcomers are both included and excluded from the processes of city-making. This case study-led course aims to examine the multi-layered relations between migration and cities and to provide a critical understanding of how urban planners and architects have responded to the challenges of various migratory movements and their impacts on cities from labor migration in the 1950s to forced migration of today. To avoid ghettoization and other forms of seclusion created for immigrant communities in the recent history of planning and design, this course suggests developing a new focus on the potentials of migration in cities and migrants as city-makers. Analyzing a variety of public spaces drawn from different parts of the world, the course will historically explore two major phases in the making of a new urban culture via migration: first, the migrants’ construction of a new identity as city-makers and, second, their inhabitation and appropriation of public spaces in cities out of which a new sense of urban community among migrants and locals as well as new post-migratory cityscapes and place-identities have started to emerge. Students are encouraged first to investigate migration as an urban resource and its potentials through research on selected themes and, then, to explore reflective practice and develop new ways for diversity in city-making: how to incorporate the tools of self-made urbanism and placemaking into the professional practices of urban planning and design; and how to make contemporary cities culturally more diverse, creative and inclusive through engaging migrants and locals at all levels of city-making.
